Q&A with The Independent Schools Eli Aziere – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

TIS cross country participant Eli Aziere interviewed with VYPE to talk about his life.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My personal goal is to run a 19:30 5k which is about 45 seconds faster than last season’s PR.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

I had the opportunity to be a Prairie Schooner Mate for Wichita’s Riverfest during the month of June so I would say that was the most fun thing I’ve done in a while. I got to meet so many awesome people from different schools which definitely made the experience that much more memorable.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher is Mr. Steere who I had for AP US History and AP Government. I think his classes are always very interesting and he knows so much about the material which makes our class discussions really awesome. I also like that he pushes me to do well in his classes and always keeps the material challenging and relevant to what’s going on in the world.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory is getting to go to state swimming in 2022. Even though I didn’t get to compete, the atmosphere was amazing and I had a lot of fun getting to cheer on my teammates.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

I’m picking two because they go together. The two teammates who inspired me the most were Matthew Jansen and Daniel Jekov who I swam with my sophomore year. I think they left such a big impression on me because by watching them race, I saw how far dedication to your sport can take you.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part of being on the team is the fact that my teammates make running so much more fun. Running by yourself kinda sucks sometimes but when you get to run with other people, it is so much better.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

I would probably take my closest senior friends on a big trip to Europe the summer before we go to college. I think we would visit the UK, France, Germany, and Italy and it would be awesome.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

I would probably go buy new shoes. I am a big sneakerhead and will never say no to a new pair.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I participated in Wichita’s Riverfest this year which allotted me about 200 volunteer hours over the course of a week. I also help with various NHS service projects such as building houses for Habitat For Humanity or volunteering for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree. Every September, I also volunteer to help in the judging area for the Wichita Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I’m involved with Environmental Action Club, Rotory’s Interact Club, Spanish Club, and Scholar’s Bowl. I really enjoy doing these activities because they make my day more interesting and I like giving back to my school and being associated with activities that I enjoy.

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

Yes. I’m involved in Student Council as the Student Body President. I am also a member of NHS and Spanish Honor Society.
