The Independent School’s Jason Tsai – Team Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

VYPE interviewed TIS Coach Jason Tsai to discuss the teams future. Tsai told us “My favorite part of working with this team is seeing each player getting better as the season progresses regardless of what their skill level was entering the season. We have a healthy mix of new, seasoned, and veteran players and regardless of if the lesson is on the mental or physical side of tennis, seeing that light bulb finally turn on, if you will, is very rewarding as a coach.”

Tsai shared that this season the team will aim to “get better daily as the season progresses. We have a strong team of veterans and first-year players who can make some noise once the post season comes around.” Veterans who participated in what Tsai called the teams “best moment” from last season.

“The best moment from last season has to be at our League tournament. All of the hard work the girls put in throughout the season came to fruition as they played their best tennis throughout the tournament” said Tsai.

Moving forward Tsai sees Gillian Skelton and Brenna Estep becoming the teams “dynamic duo.” Saying “Gillian is entering her Senior season after a strong finish to her Junior year where she was a couple of points away in a super tiebreaker from going to state. Brenna is a transfer from East High and has shown to be a solid Sophomore tennis player. These two have been doing a great job leading both the high school and middle school teams.”

And whether its running concession stands during the school’s football game or participating in their academic excellence activities the teams favorite memory together will always be “the conversations during car rides to and from competitions.”
